Tequisquiapan, a magical town

Church of Tequisquiapan in the Centre

When I first heard these two words “Pueblos Mágicos”, or “magical towns”, I wasn’t quite sure what that meant. I mean sure, it’s probably a beautiful town with a nice centre and it is a bit touristic. We have these in Germany too. But when I first saw Tequisquiapan, the first town outside of Mexico City I visited, I understood what the Mexicans mean with “Pueblos Mágicos”.

This town has something special. Compared to the time in Mexico City I feel at peace here. Walking around the square, drinking a coffee or eating lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurants is just so relaxing. No matter if I had a stressful day thanks to my daughter or my wife (duck) or if my studies were a bit rough on my brain or if it was just one of these days were everything just feels meh, spending time around Plaza Miguel Hidalgo always manages to calm me down.

And of course, it is touristic. And it feels weird to say this, since I still feel like a tourist myself. Especially with my camera. But even though I only lived here for about 4 months now, I feel like at home. And yes, that is partially thanks to this one German restaurant close to the centre. Of course the food is not 100 % authentic but compared to the Mexican food we have in Germany, this restaurant does an awesome job of bringing me a little bit of Germany here to Mexico.

But not only the German food is amazing here. Of course the Mexican food could not be any better. Especially one restaurant close to the church (I will not say any names) has a special place in my heart because it was the first restaurant I ate at in Tequis. And so far I haven’t found better Enchiladas.

And if you want even more authentic Mexican food, you just have to walk a few meters east of the centre to a market. Inside you find all different kinds of street food. For my part, I really liked the Pozole there. And speaking of Pozole, the best Pozole I could find in Mexico so far is only available on weekends at the “Mercado de artesanías Tequisquiapan”. A special market that opens it’s doors only on Saturdays and Sundays. A place where you can find everything. Paintings, woodcraft, wine, toys, food and and and. For example we bought some small furniture for our daughter there.

And regarding safety, it is probably difficult to find a more safe town in Mexico.
